Grand Theft Auto VI: Thirteen years of waiting and a fever gripping the world

On Nov. 19, "GTA VI" arrives, 13 years after its predecessor. What Rockstar is promising, why it took so long, what fans are feeling and why this launch is making history before the game is even out.

The day Vice City returns has a date: Thursday, Nov. 19, 2026. That is when “Grand Theft Auto VI” comes out for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, 13 years and two months after its predecessor. Just 46 days now separate an entire generation of gamers from a moment many of them have been waiting for since childhood. No film, album or sporting event of our time generates comparable anticipation. The entertainment industry is holding its breath, the competition has cleared the field, and on the stock market an entire company’s share price hangs on a single product.

What is happening in these weeks is more than a product launch. It is the arrival of a major cultural event that has been building for over a decade: with record-breaking trailers, two delays, a hack, a labor dispute before a Scottish tribunal, preorders that leave even the company’s chief executive at a loss for words, and a fan base that has dissected every pixel of the images shown so far. This report puts into perspective what is known, what Rockstar is promising, why it has taken so long and why “GTA VI” has made history even before its release.

Thirteen years of radio silence, then an earthquake

“Grand Theft Auto V” came out on Sept. 17, 2013. According to a Take-Two press release, the game took in more than $1 billion worldwide in its first three days. It was reissued across three console generations, had sold more than 230 million copies by August 2026, according to the company, and is considered the best-selling game of the past decade. Along the way, “GTA Online” grew into a perennial source of revenue that financed Rockstar for years. That is precisely what became the flip side of success: A company that owns such a money machine is under no pressure to rush the sequel.

The sixth installment was not officially confirmed until Feb. 4, 2022. At the time, Rockstar wrote tersely that development of the next game in the series was well underway. Seven months later, on Sept. 18, 2022, came the shock: A hacker released some 90 videos of unfinished game footage. It was one of the biggest leaks in the history of the industry. What the public got to see afterward, however, amounted above all to one thing: proof that this game really exists.

On the evening of Dec. 4, 2023 (U.S. time), the first trailer went online, a day earlier than planned, because it had leaked ahead of time. What followed has been documented by Guinness World Records: 90,421,491 views in 24 hours. No video game trailer had ever drawn views faster, and neither had any other YouTube video outside the music industry. The previous record holder, a video by the YouTuber MrBeast, had reached 59.4 million. On top of that came 8.9 million likes.

The second trailer followed on May 6, 2025, a few days after the first delay. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was viewed more than 475 million times across all platforms in 24 hours. That number is not directly comparable with the Guinness figure, because it adds up all channels. But it shows what league this game plays in.

Delayed twice: Patience as currency

Rockstar had originally announced a release in fall 2025. The first delay came on May 2, 2025, pushing the release to May 26, 2026. With every game it had released, the studio wrote, its goal had been to surpass players’ expectations, and “Grand Theft Auto VI” was no exception. It said it hoped players would understand that it needed the extra time to deliver the quality they expected and deserved. Take-Two’s stock fell almost 7% that day. Chief Executive Strauss Zelnick said the company took delays seriously but remained committed to its pursuit of excellence.

The second delay followed on Nov. 6, 2025, this time to Nov. 19, 2026. Rockstar explicitly apologized, saying it regretted extending the wait once again but that the additional months would allow it to finish the game with the level of polish players had come to expect. It added that even though the wait would be a little longer, it was incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and to return to a modern-day Vice City.

Zelnick defended the decision with a remark that reveals a great deal about the company’s philosophy: If a game needed more polish to become the best possible version of itself, he said, then it would be given more time. The driving force, according to Zelnick, was the desire to deliver an entertainment experience as close to perfect as possible and to live up to consumers’ extraordinary expectations. Since then, the company has held firmly to the November date. In August 2026, it reaffirmed its annual forecast, explicitly citing its high degree of confidence in the Nov. 19 release date.

Why it took so long

The simple answer is ambition. The more honest answer is more complicated. According to industry reports, early groundwork began as far back as 2014, actual development after the release of “Red Dead Redemption 2” in late 2018 and full production around 2020. The project, code-named “Americas,” is said to have originally spanned locations in North and South America. Bloomberg News reported in July 2022 that the scope was subsequently scaled back to a fictional Miami and its surroundings, with more cities to be added later through updates.

On top of that came a cultural shift inside the studio. In 2018, “Red Dead Redemption 2” was a triumph, but also a symbol of the industry’s notorious “crunch” culture. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser had told the magazine Vulture at the time that they had been working 100-hour weeks. He later clarified that this had applied only to the four-person writing team, for three weeks, and that no one else was expected to work that way. Still, the debate had begun. In the years that followed, according to Bloomberg, Rockstar scaled back its overtime culture, compensated extra work with time off and parted ways with managers accused of toxic behavior. One employee was quoted as saying that what had been a boys’ club had become a real company. A slower, more humane studio, however, also produces more slowly.

Dan Houser himself left Rockstar in 2020. That makes “GTA VI” the first main installment whose script he is no longer involved in. According to a report in the magazine Dazed, the team has more than doubled in size since “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Then came the pandemic and remote work. In April 2024, Rockstar brought its workforce back to the office, citing productivity and security.

Vice City at dusk (Grand Theft Auto VI)

The security rationale was no mere platitude. The hacker behind the 2022 leak, Briton Arion Kurtaj, was sentenced in December 2023 to indefinite detention in a secure hospital. He had carried out the attack from a hotel room while under police protection, using a cellphone, the hotel television and a Fire TV Stick. In court, Rockstar put the damage at $5 million and thousands of hours of staff time.

That leaves the money. There are no official budget figures. According to the Financial Times, the research firm DFC Intelligence estimated the cost at $1 billion to $2 billion, including marketing. If that is accurate, “GTA VI” would be the most expensive entertainment product ever made. That figure, however, is an estimate and should be read as such.

Welcome to Leonida

The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida. At its center lies Vice City, the Miami counterpart that fans already know from “Vice City” (2002), back then still bathed in the neon light of 1986. Now the city returns in the present day. On its official website, Rockstar names five other regions: the island chain of the Leonida Keys, the swamplands of the Grassrivers, the port city of Port Gellhorn, the industrial area of Ambrosia and the wilderness around Mount Kalaga.

What is remarkable is how precisely the fan community knows this world before the game is even out. Since 2022, the fan project “State of Leonida” has been reconstructing a map of the game from trailer stills, sun angles and street signs. When game footage leaked again in August 2026, the rough layout of this map was largely confirmed, according to reports. The surprise: Leonida apparently has more water and more towns than fans had assumed. Rockstar has never put a number on how big the map actually is. The comparisons with “Red Dead Redemption 2” now making the rounds are speculation.

Lucia and Jason: A couple like Bonnie and Clyde

For the first time in the history of the main series, a woman takes center stage as a fixed protagonist: Lucia Caminos. Female playable characters are not entirely new to the series, however. As early as the very first “Grand Theft Auto,” from 1997, players could choose among several characters, four of them women. But a protagonist with a story, a voice and character development of their own had always been a man: Claude, Tommy Vercetti, Carl Johnson, Niko Bellic, Michael, Franklin and Trevor.

At the start, Lucia has just been released from prison in Leonida. At her side is Jason Duval, a former soldier who works as a drug courier in the Keys. The trailers tell the story of a couple trying to get by in a system stacked against them. The comparison with Bonnie and Clyde is an obvious one, and Rockstar deliberately plays with it.

Rockstar surrounds the pair with an ensemble introduced on its official website: Cal Hampton, Jason’s friend, a conspiracy theorist who listens in on Coast Guard radio; Boobie Ike, an entrepreneur with real estate, a strip club and a recording studio; Dre’Quan Priest, head of the label Only Raw Records; the rap duo Real Dimez; the bank robber Raul Bautista; and Brian Heder, a drug smuggler and Jason’s landlord. Actor Stephen Root is so far the only voice actor to have confirmed his role, telling The Associated Press in September 2026 that he voices Brian Heder. The names of the actors playing Lucia and Jason are circulating among fans, but they have not been officially confirmed.

What’s new: The innovations

On Aug. 27, 2026, with “An Extended Look,” shown first on Netflix and then on YouTube, Rockstar demonstrated in detail for the first time how “GTA VI” plays: just under 27 minutes, consisting entirely of gameplay captured on a PlayStation 5, according to the studio. Rockstar described what it showed as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series to date. IGN critic Ryan McCaffrey said it was possibly the best-looking game he had ever seen.

“An Extended Look,” released Aug. 27, 2026: just under 27 minutes of gameplay footage, captured on the PlayStation 5. Video: YouTube

Several things can be gleaned from the material shown and from reports in the trade press. First, lighting rendered at a new level, with ray tracing for global illumination, reflections and shadows. Second, a city that is alive: dense crowds, passersby going about their own business, plus beaches, clubs and shopping streets that do not look like stage sets. Third, a game world that reacts to the characters. According to reports, the characters’ appearance and condition change depending on their activity and sleep, and a reputation system (“Criminal Profile”) keeps track of how players behave. Fourth, satire of the present day: In Leonida, everyone films everyone, and viral clips and a parody of social media are an integral part of the world. Game Informer magazine’s cover story of Sept. 29, 2026, also highlighted a weather system and Leonida’s wildlife.

Then there are activities that give the game breadth: basketball, diving, skydiving, nightclubs. According to reports in various trade outlets, Rockstar intends to forgo, at launch, both microtransactions in single-player mode and generative artificial intelligence in the game. The studio has not officially confirmed these points in any form available to us.

One point, however, is stirring debate: According to the YouTuber Davy Jones, who cites Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, the game in its current state of development runs at 30 frames per second on consoles. Whether a performance mode with 60 frames will follow is still open, according to Jones, and Nelson intends to consult with the technical team. There is no direct statement from Rockstar on the matter. A PC version has not been announced. If earlier Rockstar titles are any guide, anyone who wants to play on PC will have to be prepared for a longer wait.

From a jumble of pixels to a global event: The GTA games compared

Anyone who wants to understand “GTA VI” needs to know how the series evolved. The first “Grand Theft Auto” came out on Nov. 28, 1997, a top-down game with simple graphics and provocative content. The breakthrough came in 2001 with “GTA III,” the first installment set in a three-dimensional open city. It defined a genre that is still known as “open world” today. “Vice City” (2002) brought the 1980s, neon and the first protagonist with a voice: Ray Liotta voiced Tommy Vercetti. “San Andreas” (2004) expanded the city into an entire state, “GTA IV” (2008) brought narrative gravitas, and “GTA V” (2013) three playable protagonists and, with “GTA Online,” a business model that changed the industry.

Title Year Setting Protagonist(s) Sales (approx.)
Grand Theft Auto 1997 Liberty City, San Andreas, Vice City several selectable characters 6 million
GTA III 2001 Liberty City Claude 17.5 million
GTA Vice City 2002 Vice City (1986) Tommy Vercetti 20 million
GTA San Andreas 2004 San Andreas (1992) Carl “CJ” Johnson 27.5 million
GTA IV 2008 Liberty City Niko Bellic over 25 million
GTA V 2013 Los Santos, Blaine County Michael, Franklin, Trevor over 230 million
GTA VI 2026 Leonida, Vice City Lucia Caminos, Jason Duval due Nov. 19

What stands out is how thoroughly “GTA V” overshadows all its predecessors. The figure of more than 230 million copies, however, is also the result of three console generations and several reissues. Critics’ scores were actually slightly higher for “GTA IV,” at 98 out of 100 on Metacritic, than for “GTA V,” at 97. That puts the bar for “GTA VI” at a height almost no other game has ever reached.

The economics of a phenomenon

Rockstar opened preorders on June 25, 2026. The standard edition costs $79.99 or 79.99 euros, the Ultimate Edition 99.99. In Switzerland, retailers listed the standard version at 74.95 Swiss francs and the pricier edition at 99.95 francs, according to the Swiss free daily 20 Minuten. We are not aware of any official franc prices from Rockstar. Customers who preorder receive the “Vintage Vice City Pack,” with a classic car, a garage and clothing. Before the official price was announced, analysts had speculated about $100 or more. Rockstar stayed below that, but above the previous industry standard of $70.

Zelnick described what happened next in unusually euphoric terms on the quarterly earnings call in August. The level of preorders was unprecedented and astonishing, he said, and the company was very grateful for that. Then he immediately applied the brakes: The company had not yet sold a single unit, preorders could be canceled, and it did not believe in declaring victory before it had been achieved.

The market research firm Newzoo estimated digital preorders in the last week of June at about $180 million in the U.S. and the five largest European markets alone, and at about $260 million worldwide. For launch week, Newzoo forecasts revenue of between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion, with a central estimate of about $4.5 billion, which would correspond to roughly 51 million copies sold. By comparison, “GTA V” took in more than $1 billion in its first three days in 2013. No title had ever reached such preorder numbers so far ahead of release, Newzoo wrote.

Take-Two is sticking to a revenue forecast (net bookings) of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion for the fiscal year ending in March 2027, a record that rests in large part on a single game. The impact extends beyond the company. As early as late 2024, Bloomberg reported that publishers were holding off on setting their release dates in order to avoid the game. According to the gaming news site Dexerto, “GTA VI” is the only major game coming out in November 2026. Around the launch, Rockstar is staging an entire ecosystem: “Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album,” with 34 original songs, comes out on Nov. 19 on the Atlantic Records label, with contributions from Travis Scott, PinkPantheress, Morgan Wallen and Keith Richards, according to industry reports. A collector’s box called “The Goodtime State: Vice City Collection” costs $399 and does not even include the game.

What the fans think and feel

The anticipation has long since spawned its own forms of expression. The phrase “We got X before GTA 6” became one of the most enduring internet memes of recent years. It accompanied world events, elections and records with the bitterly ironic reminder that the thing that really mattered still had not arrived. On Reddit, the r/GTA6 subreddit has about 1.6 million members, according to third-party statistics, an increase of about 280,000 within a year. The trailers were analyzed frame by frame, license plates deciphered, sun positions calculated.

The mood, though, is by no means purely euphoric. Every delay was met with ridicule and genuine disappointment. The fact that the physical edition contains only a download code in the case and no disc angered collectors. “For collectors and enthusiasts, this is a joke,” 20 Minuten quoted one reader as saying. Two North American retailers refused to stock the game at all as a result. And when gameplay footage leaked again in August 2026, Rockstar wrote that it had been heartbreaking for the team and that this was not how it had wanted to show the game. The studio went on to say it was very sorry that everything had taken so long, from finishing the game (almost done, it noted) to sharing more details. Almost done: Rarely has a parenthesis electrified so many people at once.

The fever has reached Switzerland, too. Guido Berger of the digital desk at SRF, Switzerland’s German-language public broadcaster, called the release a “singular event in entertainment.” With “GTA,” he said, superlatives are hard to avoid. He described Vice City as a “condensed fever dream of the country,” meaning the United States. When preorders opened, SRF also reported on a company that plans to close on release day because of the absences it expects.

The dark side: A labor dispute in court

The full story includes the uncomfortable part, too. In late October 2025, Rockstar fired 34 employees in Britain and Canada, 31 of them in Britain, most of them at Rockstar North in Edinburgh. The IWGB union called it the most brazen and ruthless case of union busting in the history of the games industry. Rockstar countered that it had acted against a small number of individuals who had distributed and discussed confidential information in a public forum. That, the company said, had nothing whatsoever to do with the right to join a union. A bid to have the workers’ wages paid in the interim failed in January 2026. In June, however, the employment tribunal rejected Rockstar’s application to have the blacklisting allegations thrown out at a preliminary stage. The case has been heard in Glasgow since Sept. 10, 2026, and the hearing is scheduled to conclude in mid-October, just a few weeks before the launch.

Arena: Can GTA VI live up to the expectations?

For: Yes, it will even exceed them. In more than two decades, Rockstar has not released a new major game that disappointed critics. “GTA IV,” “GTA V” and “Red Dead Redemption 2” rank among the highest-rated games of all time. The studio took the time it needed instead of shipping an unfinished product, as has happened with other big-budget productions in recent years. Experts praise the material shown so far as a technical benchmark, the preorders are unprecedented in the words of the company’s chief executive, and forgoing microtransactions in single-player mode would signal a commitment to classic gaming. If any studio can carry the weight of these expectations, it is this one.

Against: The expectations are too high for any game. Thirteen years of anticipation raise the stakes higher than any product can bear. That the game apparently runs at 30 frames per second for now seems out of step with the times in 2026, the $80 price sets a precedent, the discless packaging angers the most loyal buyers, and there is no PC version. The labor dispute in Glasgow and the leaks raise questions about the company’s culture. And finally: The world has changed since 2013. Satirizing America has become harder at a time when reality outstrips any parody.

Commentary: Let the fire burn

It is in the nature of a cultural event that it can only be fully grasped in hindsight. With “GTA VI,” things are different. It is already clear that this Nov. 19 will go down in entertainment history: as the day a single work pulls more people into a fictional world at once than ever before. No movie has ever grossed $4 billion in a week. If the forecasts are even roughly accurate, a video game will do exactly that.

One can criticize the delays, the price, the missing disc. The questions surrounding the fired employees should be taken seriously; a tribunal will answer them. But one should not overlook what is on display here: a studio that has defied the dictates of quarterly results in order to release a work only once it is finished. In an industry that often ships games half-finished and patches them later with updates, that is almost an act of resistance.

The gamers who cruised through Los Santos as teenagers in 2013 are now in their mid-20s to early 30s. Many of them have families, jobs, responsibilities. On Nov. 19, they will get up early nonetheless, or not go to bed at all. That is not an escape from reality. It is a return to a place they have missed for 13 years without ever having set foot in it. Vice City is waiting. Just 46 days to go.
